Dr Douglas Samuel is a consultant physician specialising in gastrointestinal (GI) and liver disorders. A well functioning GI tract or liver is important for well being and life-long health. Disease in these organs can be the source of chronic health problems interfering with quality of life. Dr Samuel helps patients to avoid or cure these disorders. He works closely with referring general practitioners and specialists both before and after consultations for comprehensive care.
His main rooms are within North Shore Private Hospital, St Leonards where he consults and performs gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. He offers a monthly rural gastroenterology outreach service to the New South Wales Mid-North coast. Based at the Mayo Hospital, Taree, he is available for consultations and endoscopies and video consultations.
Crohn's and colitis
Dr Samuel has a specialty Crohn’s and colitis clinic in the Sydney South West. He is also a principal investigator on national and international clinical trials. He and a team of colleagues are researching new therapies to control and cure inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - a group of disorders where the intestines become inflamed (red and swollen).
Bowel cancer prevention
Dr Samuel has many years experience helping his patients to avoid or treat bowel cancer - a condition afflicting 1 in 10 Australians. He is skilled in colonoscopic mucosal resection of polyps - precancerous bowel lesions. Their removal is a key strategy in the prevention of bowel cancer.
Endoscopic procedures
Dr Samuel is one of a few gastroenterologists in New South Wales providing double balloon enteroscopy – an endoscopic technique to examine and treat diseases of the small bowel. He has expertise in several gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures and has performed over 10000 gastroscopies and colonoscopies.
